Overview

MYPEOPLE Project

The economic and social instability generated by wars and the resulting tensions on commodity prices present distinct challenges that may further exacerbate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, amplifying inequalities and altering poverty dynamics globally. Addressing these issues highlights the urgent need to identify the most effective policies and strategies to mitigate the consequences of these crises.

MYPEOPLE (“Measuring inequalitY, PovErty and living cOnditions for Planning Local stratEgies”) aims to address the impacts of the current crises on well-being, social inclusion, lifestyles, and behaviours. By monitoring the deteriorating living conditions of those already vulnerable to poverty and identifying new individuals seeking social and financial assistance, particularly among the middle class, MYPEOPLE seeks to provide critical insights.

The recent rise in prices of essential foodstuffs has significantly influenced people's lifestyles and habits. Moreover, although it is known that the pandemic has affected employment prospects, economic opportunities, social interactions, sports, food consumption, and healthy eating habits, the combined effects and their variations across different local areas or specific population groups remain largely unexplored.

Project’s goals

The MYPEOPLE project is guided by four primary objectives:

1) Analyse current welfare systems: Investigate the current welfare systems in Lombardy, Tuscany, and Campania. These regions represent key areas of Northern, Central, and Southern Italy, each with distinctly different living conditions and quality of life.

2) Conduct probability-based surveys: Perform probability-based surveys in the three regions to build a comprehensive dataset on household living conditions, with a particular focus on health and food safety. This dataset will consider the substitution effect of food products due to family impoverishment following the energy crisis and the unavailability of certain raw materials, in addition to the impacts of the pandemic.

3) Develop indicators and statistical models: Use the survey results to create a collection of indicators at the local-area level and develop statistical models. These models will measure the effects of recent crises on household living conditions from a multidimensional perspective, providing a comprehensive understanding of their impacts.

4) Evaluate and recommend welfare policies: Assess public welfare policies through survey analysis and propose policy recommendations to enhance local welfare systems. The project will consider the territorial heterogeneity and specific needs of different population groups and families to propose targeted intervention strategies.

The data

We are conducting three probability-based sample surveys in Lombardy, Tuscany, and Campania to gather information on the effects of recent crises on household living conditions.

The questionnaire is divided into four sections:

1) Family characteristics: Collecting data on the composition and demographics of the family.

2) Family economic situation: Assessing the financial status and income sources of the family.

3) Access to services: Evaluating the availability and usage of essential services by the family.

4) Other respondent information: Gathering additional relevant information about the respondent.

Project Development

The core of the MYPEOPLE project is the three probability-based sample surveys across the regions of Lombardy, Tuscany, and Campania. The data collected will yield reliable and insightful indicators of exclusion, vulnerability, and deprivation at regional, provincial, and local levels, as well as for specific subgroups within the population. In addition, microsimulation experiments will be performed to predict the likely impacts of policy changes.

The project is led by the University of Siena and includes the University of Naples Parthenope, the University Cattaneo LIUC, and the University of Bergamo. Each team member brings complementary expertise, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the project's essential topics. This collaborative approach will enable MYPEOPLE to make a significant scientific impact both nationally and internationally, as well as achieve practical outcomes through the effective execution of surveys in the three Italian regions.

Effective coordination will ensure continuous and dynamic communication and collaboration among the project's researchers. The project is structured around six milestones to ensure the timely and successful completion of its activities and the effective dissemination of findings.

Expected Results

The primary expected outcomes of the MYPEOPLE research project are:

1) Development of an innovative dataset:

Creation of a new dataset based on information collected through probability-based surveys in Lombardy, Tuscany, and Campania. This dataset will include up-to-date estimates of various dimensions of multidimensional poverty.

2) Advanced statistical methodologies:

Application of sophisticated statistical techniques to estimate the risk of multidimensional poverty, also at the local level.

3) Detailed empirical analysis:

Provision of a new, detailed analysis of how recent crises have impacted well-being across different Italian regions. This will offer a more nuanced understanding of regional and local effects.

4) Policy evaluation and recommendations:

Evaluation of current policies and development of proposals aimed at alleviating vulnerability for households most affected by the ongoing crises.

INVALSI
Italian National Institute for the Evaluation of the Education and Training System (Istituto Nazionale per la VALutazione del Sistema educativo di Istruzione e di formazione). It is an Italian research organisation operating under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Education. Among its objectives, it evaluates students' learning levels during and at the end of high school. The evaluation is based on official tests conducted annually on students at different school levels, according to criteria and methods consistent with those applied at the international level to ensure comparability. In addition, INVALSI carries out the surveys necessary to evaluate the added value achieved by schools; it collects information on the socio-economic and cultural status of the families to which students belong.
